Bennet Omalu is a Nigerian-American physician, medical examiner, and neuropathologist. He is best known for his discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a neurodegenerative disease caused by repetitive head trauma, in American football players. Omalu's research on CTE was met with resistance from the National Football League (NFL), who initially denied the existence of the disease. His story was later portrayed in the 2015 film "Concussion," in which he was played by actor Will Smith. Omalu's work has brought greater awareness to the dangers of head injuries in contact sports and has led to significant changes in the way these sports are played and regulated. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to medical science, including the American Medical Association's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award.
